Yes, you read that subject line right. We’ve reached the magic number!

500 times since November, 2002, you’ve heard a little bell ring, and found the Scribbles newsletter in your email inbox – absolutely free.

What would you say the combination of Literary Celebrations, Information, Events, and Calls for Submissions was worth to you, per issue? A penny? A nickel? Maybe a dime or a quarter? Dare I hope – a dollar?

I ask for a very good reason.

One time a year, I ask that you return a little of the good karma Scribbles has brought into your life in a tangible way. Not by sending money to me, but by making a modest donation to a cause near and dear to your faithful Scribbler – the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk for a Cure.

The disease took my father and my brother. Help us find a cure, so other families don’t have to suffer like that.

Please click here to go to my personal walk page, and join our walk team, Robert’s Racers, or make a donation.

You’ll see that I’ve kicked things off with my own donation of $100. So think back to my earlier question. If each Scribbles was worth a penny to you, please donate $5 to help cure diabetes. If it was worth a nickel, dime, or quarter to you, that’s $25, $50, or $125. And if you’d pay a $1 each time you’ve enjoyed Scribbles, that’s an incredible $500 donation.

Don’t have extra cash lying around? Then consider joining our walk team, and asking 10 friends for a $10 donation. We’ll take a nice walk around the UCF campus at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 5th, and you’re guaranteed to feel fabulous afterward. Don’t make me come get you!

Any help you can give is sincerely appreciated by JDRF &

Your Scribbler,

Darlyn Finch

Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 1 – 3, 2010

It’s time to “sing a new song,” or rather draw a new dream. If you have ever yearned to illustrate children’s picture books, come, take some time for yourself, and translate your dream into action. Join us and begin the journey to make your dream come true. This a great opportunity to learn more about some of the joys and challenges of the business, to gather ideas, tips and information, to experiment and create a variety of backgrounds, and then to compose and begin on your own sample double spread illustration which eventually can go on your website and in your portfolio. The workshop will cover topics such as: publishing opportunities in a tough economy, developing your style, composition, e-books and pods, borders and gullies, storyboards and dummies, traditional or digital, royalties vs. lump sums, timelines, scanner bed sizes vs. digital photography, galley proofs, websites, contracts, marketing information, “beyond” the story, artist as writer aspects, questions and answers and more.

In a relaxing, supportive atmosphere you’ll feel refreshed and go home with lots of new ideas and concrete information as well as a composed, partially completed double spread illustration. Dreams plus action can enhance your life and even change the world. Go for it!
